Step 5
SENSORY INFORMATION & NUTRITION RESOURCES
In young children, 90% of what looks like a "bad" behavior or behavior problem at mealtimes is actually a sensory reaction to the sensations of the foods that the children can't handle physically.
STEP ONE - REASSURE
you're okay, it's okay, we're fine, oh-oh, oops, we can manage this, we can fix it, it's alright
STEP TWO - LABEL THE SENSORY ISSUE / PROBLEM
it's too big a smell, big spicy taste, that's wet, hmmm.no taste?, too rough, it's squishy, bright green!, too hard to chew
STEP THREE - GIVE A BETTER SOLUTION
you can wave the smell away, you can wipe off your tongue. you can dry it off, we can add a better taste, we can chop it into smaller pieces, you can use your spoon.
